Ebook About #1 of 10 Best True Crime Books of the Year by Marie Claire Named Most Anticipated Crime Book of the Year by CrimeReads A chilling true story—part memoir, part crime investigation—reminiscent of Ann Rule’s classic The Stranger Beside Me, about a little girl longing for love and how she found friendship with her charismatic babysitter—who was also a vicious serial killer.Growing up on Cape Cod in the 1960s, Liza Rodman was a lonely little girl. During the summers, while her mother worked days in a local motel and danced most nights in the Provincetown bars, her babysitter—the kind, handsome handyman at the motel where her mother worked—took her and her sister on adventures in his truck. He bought them popsicles and together, they visited his “secret garden” in the Truro woods. To Liza, he was one of the few kind and understanding adults in her life. Everyone thought he was just a “great guy.” But there was one thing she didn’t know; their babysitter was a serial killer. Some of his victims were buried—in pieces—right there, in his garden in the woods. Though Tony Costa’s gruesome case made screaming headlines in 1969 and beyond, Liza never made the connection between her friendly babysitter and the infamous killer of numerous women, including four in Massachusetts, until decades later. Haunted by nightmares and horrified by what she learned, Liza became obsessed with the case. Now, she and cowriter Jennifer Jordan reveal the chilling and unforgettable true story of a charming but brutal psychopath through the eyes of a young girl who once called him her friend.Book The Babysitter: My Summers with a Serial Killer Review :
I feel it’s important for me to preface my review with the fact that one of my larger sub-genres in my personal library is a section entitled: CRIMINAL PSYCHOLOGY-PROFILING (SERIAL KILLERS)-ORGANIZED CRIME-LAW ENFORCEMENT… ETC. The reason I feel it’s important for people reading this to know that… a little bizarre… despicable …inhuman behavior… and crime scenes will not solely determine my review of a book. What this book attempts to do… is almost create two books in one… by going back and forth every chapter or every few chapters between the story of a lowlife serial killer by the name of Tony Costa who murdered and mutilated multiple young women… while taking every drug imaginable…while mostly in the Provincetown, Massachusetts area. While half the book revolves mostly on this deranged humanless thing… the other half covers one of the co-authors…. Liza Rodman’s extremely unhappy life in the same general area. While the story on Costa details all his excuses such as his Father dying in World War II… he turns to drug and serial killing… Rodman who blames everything in her life that wasn’t “ice cream and cotton candy”… on her divorced selfish… partying... though extremely hard working mother. One of her mother’s biggest M.O’s was asking anyone and everyone to baby sit her two daughters… without any hesitation… even if she didn’t know them… or perform even the most minuscule background check. Tony Costa was a handyman at the motel that Rodman’s mother worked at so one unfortunate moment she nabbed Costa to baby sit her daughters. Now here’s the “rub”… and the so called concept for the setup of this book… which though it had some interesting information… in my opinion… as a person that has read at least fifty or more books in this category… it tries to serve two masters… and in doing so it fails to create one powerful easy flowing book that would accomplish a goal of one complete satisfying book.So the summary is a book of two masters… that serves neither completely. No crime book of this type would ever spend as much detailed time… which is ninety-percent of the time complaining that a mother didn’t think her daughter was pretty… didn’t provide five-star-food… smacked her a few times… and oh yea… the serial killer was nice to the eight-plus-year-old-girl… while she accompanied him on errands such as emptying the trash. Obviously the life of the young girl could not stand on its own… complaints and all. The serial killers pattern and growth certainly could have easily carried reader’s interests with more detail. Just the fact that for fifty years the little girl now woman hadn’t known the truth. As the pages fill with the little girl complaints…your hairs too curly… your hair is the wrong color… what’s the matter with your skin… finish your dinner, etc... etc… and perhaps the most stomach turning antidotes resort to her “discovering” her body… at around eight-years-old (I’m not going back into the book to verify the exact age,)… and discovering it… over… and over… and over. That should have been left out of the book altogether and concentrated on the traits and crimes of the serial killer… and therein is the whole problem of the book.NOTE-WARNING: Since the co-author’s last names are “RODMAN” and “JORDAN”… DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO THINKING YOU'RE GETTING A BOOK ON THE NBA CHAMPIONSHIP CHICAGO BULLS YEARS! Can we talk for a minute about this book?! I need more true crime like this! I loved the way that this story was woven. The narrative approach to a nonfiction subject was so phenomenally executed. The chapters alternated between young Liza and Tony Costa's life (which involved lots of secrets and lots of murder). The book focused more on the life of Liza and her interactions with and perceptions of Tony rather than the investigations into Tony' crimes. I loved this perspective and approach.Tony was a "babysitter" of sorts to Liza...someone she looked up to and someone she looked forward to spending time with. Only Liza did not know that Tony was hiding a terrible secret. He was actually a serial killer! One thing I kept coming back to was how terrible Liza's mom was. I can totally understand why she latched on to Tony so strongly when her own parental figure was so cold and callous towards her and Tony offered her the attention she craved and a sense that someone actually cared for her. Ughhh- Liza's childhood was more than anyone should have to endure.Tony was such a "nice guy" in the eyes of Liza, and most everyone who came in contact with. His development and spiral into a cold hearted, maniacal killer was interesting, but also so very disturbing. The fact that someone can appear to be one thing but is actually secretly cloaked in evil is simply terrifying. It's like you never know if you could be living in the midst of the next serial killer. It sends shivers down my spine even thinking about that.Okay, so, long story short, without giving away too much.....if you like true crime, READ THIS BOOK, NOW. Like right now...go add to cart and thank me later.
